Stereotypes Are So Yesterday

These days, job titles and personality descriptions aren't so black and white, there are now 50 Shades of Grey in between ;) But in all seriousness, there is nothing wrong with wanting to wear more than one hat.

Your mom was correct when she told your childhood self that you could grow up to be anything you wanted to be. I told my mom that I was going to be a princess, writer, and a veterinarian, and gosh darn it, I made 2/3 of my promise happen! I did become a princess(even if it was only performing,) I am a writer, and I have owned many different pets, so that's kind of like being a vet, right? The aim of this page is to break the barriers of stereotypes. Just because you are a girl doesn't mean you have to like pink. Just because you are a classical music composer doesn't mean that you can't enjoy modern death metal rock. Now is the time to open your mind to all the possibilities out there. Everything you ever wanted to do, everything you ever wanted to become, make it happen. And make it happen now.

Please send your own headshot, along with your favorite thing to do(besides tech-related things) to be added to the coveted list of non-stereotype, kick-ass folks! Email: kait.dunning@gmail.com

will.i.am, founder of music sensation The Blackeyed Peas
We originally know him from his dropped beats, now he is dropping lines of code.

I used to spend a lot of time with this Princess, reading books and waltzing with a furry Prince. I also sing and love fashion. Now, I  am the author of a tech blog, am learning how to code, and am helping to build a better future through the education of our kids. How times change! :)

Emma Mulqueeny is the Founder of Rewired State and Young Rewired State, Initiator of the Silent Club, as well as a Mum to two lovely girls. She is very passionate about Open Data and teaching kids to code! "Young Rewired State was born back in 2009 when a small group of us decided that we needed to bring the open government data revolution to the next generations. Our intention was to show them what had been fought and won on their behalf for democracy and scrutiny, introduce them to the potential for open data, open government or otherwise, in a non-dull way."

Marissa Mayer- CEO, Yahoo, and recently, a new mum
"I refuse to be stereotyped," she told The New York Times in 2009. "I think it's very comforting for people to put me in a box. 'Oh, she's a fluffy girlie girl who likes clothes and cupcakes. Oh, but wait, she is spending her weekends doing hardware electronics.' "

Simon Cowell
Even Simon Cowell is jumping on the tech bandwagon. In his attempt to create a Tech X Factor show with Will.i.am, it's obvious that he does not think the tech scene is absolutely dreadful.

Martine "Mars" Martin is a Senior Secretary to an MP. However, she's not only about politics, she's a techie too! It seems you can mix Parly policy with PHP ;)

" I am a bit of a computer bodger - current PC is a quadcore on a Micro ATX motherboard encased in a sexy silver Thermaltake Lanbox! I'm also into recording and mixing music. I worked at Sibelius for a while so a lot of my composing is done with that software. I do my recording and mixing in ProTools, using Aries and Solaris mics, loads of iPad apps and my Juno D limited edition keyboard. I'm also a massive Photoshop junkie and I love to make digital artworks. What else? Oh yes, I'm the keyboard/synths player in a gothic metal band called Orpheum!"

Rachel Murdock, Student at London Metropolitan University
She currently studies Relational Databases and is loving it! She is learning Oracle, Microsoft Access and PHP and #C. "I enjoy studying databases because it is something that can be applied to many businesses and with new technologies such as HTML5, possibilities for future web application development and business websites can be enhanced vastly. I am excited to be a part of that! "

Her non techie hobby is travel: "I enjoy both short distance and long distance trips. I have been to a few places in Europe such as Spain, Belgium, Germany and Greece. I have also traveled to America and hope to explore places in the future."
